My girl, Dr. Jolene Brighten, was talking about how hormonal birth control has become part of the “going off to college” care package (Which like, let’s definitely have a round of applause for the pregnancies prevented during a time in many women’s lives where they’re likely first getting into the social party scene & maybe intimately interacting with humans that won’t be around for the long haul).

That being said, there’s a big camp of women walking around that don’t know much about their cycle or understand how hormonal birth control may be affecting them.

If searching for natural ways to prevent pregnancy, consider reading Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler, It’s a super helpful read and should get you pointed in the right direction (:

3 Things to Know About Hormonal Birth Control:

Increases Inflammation: Inflammation is the root cause of most disease. Want to lose fat & have a good body composition? You better believe we want inflammation as low as possible to keep hormones happy (especially insulin & our ‘master gland’, the thyroid).

Insulin resistance can lead to issues with blood sugar, & also bring about autoimmune issues like PCOS. High inflammation levels also inhibit thyroid function – and considering our thyroid directly impacts metabolism, digestion, & sleep – If the thyroid is unhappy, our ability to gain muscle, lose fat, and have a good body composition will go out the window.

Countering Inflammation: Minimize sugar, eat plenty of healthy fats (like avocados & olive oil), balance blood sugar by eating well-rounded meals, and consider supplementing with turmeric and fish oil (6-8g total EPA/DHA daily).

Nutrient Depletion: Hormonal birth control use may deplete the body of antioxidants, B vitamins, and minerals like zinc, magnesium, and selenium. All which are ESSENTIAL for optimal thyroid function or involved with hormone synthesis/utilization at some level. If taking hormonal birth control, it’s VITAL to supplement all of these!

Countering Nutrient Depletion: Consider supplementing with Zinc, Magnesium, Selenium, B Complex, & Vitamin D. We love Garden of Life brand supplements!

Altered Gut Health: HBC increases internal inflammation and disrupts our normal gut flora – Meaning we may overgrow yeast and bacteria and encourage gut imbalances like h.pylori, SIBO, Candida, or Leaky Gut.

Countering Sub-Optimal Gut Health: Minimize sugar, eat plenty of vegetables and colorful foods, supplement with probiotics, regularly rotate usage of bone broth, collagen, and fermented foods.
