Trader Joe’s Grocery Guide: Fun Winter Holiday Foods

Not new news: nobodyyy holidays harder than Trader Joes. Sometimes it can feel hard to be in “holiday mode” in Texas. 80 degree weather and Christmas tunes just don’t quite go together – HAHA. But step foot in good ol’ Trader Joseph’s and you’ll be stepping right inside a winter wonderland. 

Almond nog, hot cocoa flavored breakfast cereal, jingle jangle mixes, festive holiday drinks and peppermint cremes… *insert heavy breathing* So how do you keep from Garfield-ing an entire box of TJ’s Peppermint Joe Joe’s in one sitting into your mouth? Not sure I can help you there (:


A few tips to make navigating food and the holidays hopefully feel a little easier:

  • Prioritize sleep. Lack of sleep can exacerbate food cravings and sensitivity to insulin/carbs. I know it’s tough with travel and family, but do your best to get those zzz’s!


  • Drink up. Dehydration can feel remarkably similar to hunger. All the water and electrolytes!


  • Meat + Veggies, Meat + Veggies: At meals, try to load up your plate with lots of protein and lots of veggies. Certainly enjoy cookies and/or whatever your favorite holidays foods are, but consider setting the minimum goal for yourself of protein + a veggie at every meal


  • Fiber. Whether due to travel, stress, or foods outside of our usual, digestion can quickly get a little “off” during holidays and family time. Make sure to be getting in lots of high fiber foods during each day – avocado, berries, beans, lentils, sweet potato, high fiber protein bars…


  • Hang out with fam and loved ones *away* from the kitchen. This tip is so obvious but really does make a difference. Outta sight, outta mind. Try hanging out and catching up with your people in a place that isn’t the kitchen. If you’re staring at food, you’re probably going to be more inclined to eat even more vs. if you’re in a different part of the house 


  • Steps: This is obviously super location and weather dependent, but stay moving and if possible, get outside! Assuming we’re not up to our eyeballs in snow, could be fun to get the family out mountain biking, throwing around a football, go for a fun, etc. Ideally, we’d still love to get our usual 7000-8000 steps/day (but no sweat if it’s Snowpocalyse outside and it’s simply not an option)


  • Do you plan to workout? Most people travel for quite a few days. Consider setting a game plan before you arrive regarding whether or not you intend to get in some workouts. If you do intend to workout… Can you stay at a hotel with dumbbells? Is it decent enough outside to bundle up and go for a run? Can you throw some dumbbells or kettlebells in the car if driving as your means of transport? Could you get in a 15-20 min bodyweight workout?
