Grocery Guide: Snack Ideas + Portable Foods

Sliding in with all the snack ideas and portable food ideas for busy days, holidays, road trips, and life “on the go” – because friends don’t let friends go hungry and live life without a lots of tasty snacks!

While it might be easiest to hit a gas station, Walgreens, or CVS while in a hurry or in a transit to wherever you’re headed, I can’t recommend enough to try and hit up an actual grocery store if possible as you’ll have way more options (and likely better quality food options) to choose from.

Today I showcased food ideas from Sprouts, Whole Foods, and Costco – but any grocery store will work! (:

My My, How Times Have Times Have Changed

Transparently, I used to live in the camp of ~nO sNaCkS, jUsT eAt MeAls.~ But then being a bad b*tch who works for herself and runs 2 businesses happened. And I suddenly understood needing to quickly step into the world that most people actually live in, which is the world of needing fast, convenient, and easy food.

I used to spend hours and hours every week grocery shopping and meal prepping – but as my work responsibilities increased, my time that was previously free and available to spend in the kitchen or grocery shopping decreased.

I also tend to travel 2-3 times a month and definitely intentionally aim to spend more time “out and about” than at home (lolol, welcome to having ADHD). So these days, I’m equal parts all the food AND all the snacks. I also always try to have some emergency foods and snacks in my bag or purse, so I never find myself stuck in traffic or panicking if there’s a change in plans and I’m not able to run home or stop somewhere to get food.

Portable Foods and Snack Ideas:

  • Protein: hard boiled eggs, deli meat, Three Wishes cereal, jerky, rotisserie chicken, pre-cooked chicken breast or steak, yogurt, protein bars
  • Carbs: bagels, tortillas, bread, microwave rice, microwave pasta, instant or overnight oats, rice cakes, fruit squeeze pouches, fruit, dried fruit, raw veggies, granola, breakfast cereal, chips
  • Fats: dark chocolate, avocado, guacamole, hummus

*Note: I didn’t bother to grab pictures of stuff that I hope is obvious, such as fresh fruit, raw veggies, etc. So don’t @ me for not featuring them in the pics below. I also shared pics of a few bomb foods that are a little more dessert-like in nature, such as the Hail Marry Tarts, cuz sharing is caring (:

(also a shoutout to my people who always travel with emotional support bananas like my boyfriend, I swear there’s always a minimum of no less than 2 bananas in his 4Runner at all times – HAHA)

Gentle Reminder: There’s No Such Thing as “Breakfast Foods” of  “Perfect Eating”

Sometimes people get really caught up on meals or food having to “look a certain way.” A perfect example is that people sometimes believe that the only protein they can have at breakfast is eggs… when the reality is that breakfast can and hopefully should look just like any other meal we eat during the day and encompass a protein + carb + fat + fruit + veggies.

I like eggs, but I can’t be bothered to spend time cooking and cleaning up after making eggs in the morning. So I frequent a lot of things like pre-cooked chicken sausages, pulled chicken, pulled pork, pre-cooked shrimp from Costco, etc. All foods are breakfast foods!

I can’t recommend enough how much freedom you’ll find around food and nutrition if you can let go of conventional / societal conditioning of food or meals having to “look” a certain way.

Snacks & Portable Foods I Love Frequenting:

If you looked in my bag at any given time, I tend to do a lot of fresh fruit, raw veggies, protein bars (I’m digging Go Macro Bars and RX Bar these days), beef jerky, Hu Kitchen dark, rice cakes, breakfast cereal, and granola.

If I needed a quick meal while out and about, I might grab things like pre-made sushi, hit up a hot food bar, rotisserie chickens, deli meat, pre-cooked chicken/salmon/steak, microwave rice, microwave veggies, and of course fresh fruit!

Happy shopping! I hopped between Costco, Whole Foods, and Sprouts for this food guide. Enjoy!
