Seriously. That’s the hack y’all. If your thyroid and menstrual cycle are no bueno, it’s going to be incredibly hard to feel good, to lose weight, to gain muscle, or achieve the body comp or performance goals you desire.
Your current hormone health is often a cumulative result of your nutrition habits, exercise habits, your lifestyle habits, your stress, what you’re exposed to and come in contact with, nutrient deficiencies, underlying conditions (such as endometriosis, hypothyroidism), and so on.
Potential Signs of Hormone Imbalances:
- Amenorrhea (lack of menstrual cycle)
- Acne, oily skin, breakouts (especially on jaw)
- Anxiety, depression, mood swings
- Blood sugar imbalances
- Digestive issues (low thyroid = slow digestion)
- Fibrocystic breasts, breast pain/tenderness
- Hair loss, hair thinning
- Heavy or painful menstrual cycles
- Intolerance to cold
- Long menstrual bleeds (7+ days)
- Mid-cycle spotting
- Night sweats
- No sex drive
- Short menstrual bleeds (less than 3 days)
The good news is that simple nutrition and lifestyle changes can result in massive changes in how you feel.
Also, check your prescription drugs. Hormonal birth control is a doctor-prescribed hormone imbalance that will obviously change your hormone levels and can negatively impact and/or inhibit thyroid function.
Don’t forget that a proper thyroid diagnosis involves looking at TSH, Free T3, Free T4, TPO, & TGAB at minimum. Present-day recommendations from the American College of Clinical Endocrinologists encourage a TSH between 0.3-3.0.
If you follow the work of Functional Doctor + Thyroid Specialist Dr. Amy Myers, she prefers to see a Free T3 above 3.2 PG/ML and TSH 1-2 UIU/ML or lower (but your doctor preferences may vary, so that’s a conversation for them)
Make sure to see a doctor that specializes in thyroid/hormones, you’ll likely have best luck with a functional/integrative doctor.
