I’ve been there. Despite having a formal nutrition education and possessing a Bachelor of Science in Food, Nutrition, and Dietetics, I still spent wayyy too many years “figuring things out” — so I can only imagine what it’s like for most people who don’t have the background and education.
I do know from being in the fitness and nutrition industry for 12+ years that people over complicate things and don’t truly understand the fundamentals of eating well, how and when to eat at maintenance, how to gain muscle, how to have a rocking body comp, how to lose weight (sustainably), and more importantly — how to keep it off.
The diet industry is worth over 66 billion dollars and profits off our insecurities, self-doubt, and lack of nutritional education. We have successfully created a generation and society of people that don’t know how to eat well, nourish their bodies, live a healthy lifestyle, or eat in ways that support their goals.
Despite what social media or popular magazines might tell you, we can’t perpetually live in a caloric deficit. Our body has to feel safe to get lean and stay lean. And we have to earn the right to diet.
Nutrition should be scheduled, periodized, and thought-out — just like our exercise. There are a thousand ways to skin a cat, and certainly, nothing trumps working with a coach to formulate an individually-tailored plan.
