What Our Grocery Bill Looks Like

Buying our favorite Costco faves not only helps us stock up on the good stuff in bulk, but we’re also saving lots of money when we shop like this. My #1 top budget hack: stay single forever (kiiiiiiidding, love you BIG Charlie)

In all seriousness though, I still don’t know how people afford kids. It was already expensive for just me, but now I realize that feeding boys is REALLY expensive. Especially if they love working out like mine does!

A Costco run can cost us anywhere from $100-$300, but it just depends if we’re just making a quick trip for a few things or if we’re breaking the bank and also stocking up on meat and toilet paper. We go to Costco just about weekly.

We’ll usually hit up places like Sprouts, Trader Joes, and Whole Foods to grab things as well. Since inflation is really bad the last few years, we’re averaging about $800-$1000 on groceries per month for both of us. We only probably dine out 1-2x per month, if that.

I’m 5’3 and generally aim for 120-130 grams of protein and about 2300 calories per day. Charlie is 5’9 and aiming for 160-170 grams of protein and about 2800 calories per day.

*Note: while I’m gluten and dairy-free, Charlie DOES eat some dairy. So make sure to read labels if you’re dairy-free and go to buy anything from this guide (:

Other Typical Grocery Habits
  • We try to get the bulk of our food from Costco so we can stack up on savings, especially when it comes to produce and things like fruits and veggies
  • Meat-wise, we bulk cook a lot of bison, ground beef, chicken thighs, and NY Strip Steaks
  • We also do a lot of “Cooking is Cancelled” (aka minimal cook or no-cook) proteins options: Costco Shrimp, Kevin’s Sous Vide Chicken, Trader Joe’s Chicken Apple Sausages, etc
  • We always try to keep our kitchen stocked with things that are quick and easy to grab: jerky, protein bars, fruit bars, fresh fruit, naked brand fruit smoothie bottles, orange juice, fruit squeeze packs, hard boiled eggs, deli meat, instant oatmeal, etc
